Catch the Wave
Miami-based designer Facundo Poj has created his Ofidio dining chair by layering engineered bamboo ply-oak dowels. The winsome curve of the back offers both comfort and style. Born in Argentina in 1971, Poj was trained as a master builder in Buenos Aires. He moved to Boston in the early 1990’s where he graduated from Architecture school. He also received a Masters Degree in Urban Affairs and Environmental Problems so it's no wonder he spends much of his time looking for treasures in junkyards. You might say his choice and use of materials is slightly unconventional but his designs do not suffer from this level of experimentation. While scouring junkyards, Poj searches for objects with a soul, all the while pondering the subject of memory and historic value at the deepest levels. It's this celebration of the biography of objects and materials that brings his designs such heart. The Ofidio chair and other Poj furnishings are available at Avant Gallery in Miami. You really do have to see his pieces in person to appreciate the beauty he achieves with his craftsmanship. This Saturday evening just happens to be an excellent time to visit the gallery, as owner Dmitry Prut is keeping Avant open late as he debuts new works of art by Leonardo Hidalgo, Arno Elias and Alejandro Vigilante. An RSVP is required. I've featured the full Avant story, along with an image of Poj's Ofidio stool, on my Examiners page.
