Material Whirl

This Lucite Adirondack chair by Serge de Troyer is one of the finest examples we know of a designer experimenting with materials, something that can make a piece of furniture fresh and exciting. I asked the Miami Beach-based de Troyer, a native of Belgium, to explain his inspiration for this ghostly beauty of a chair.

“This chair is just one of my favorite pieces in my collection. The inspiration for it came to me in a rebellious state-of-mind in which I wanted to capture a contradiction in design. I wanted to bring the outdoors indoors, and take a recognizable everyday item and morph it into an accent for virtually any decor. I feel that I have achieved that as well as creating my own unique touch to an American classic. By merging the translucent sexy simplicity that comes from Lucite and the sense of leisure and tranquility from the Adirondack chair, I created a timeless piece. I purposely choose to use thicker than normal Lucite so that the Chair captures more light and gives the illusion it is made of glass or ice.

“Needless to say, the Adirondack chair is an iconic outdoor furniture piece so bringing it indoors and making it a quintessential item in a decor posed its own challenges. In addition, I had to work with the limitation of the medium while making it convey my design and its future practicality. The piece is contoured so that it is comfortable as it is pleasant to look at.”

I first saw the chair at Maison 24 in Bridgehampton, where it is available for $4,800 plus shipping. See other designs by de Troyer on his web site. “I am naturally drawn to the beauty that comes with design,” says the former runway model, who refined his sense of taste while pacing the catwalk for the likes of Valentino and Versace, collecting contemporary art, and designing interiors and furnishings.
